Set designed for Blood Brothers, The Musical.
Blood brothers is a musical written by Willy Russel, performed for the first time in 1983. The action takes place in the 60’s in Liverpool. It relates to the story of twin brothers separated at birth, and raised in different families with different backgrounds.
I’ve decided to set up my set in Paris (19th district), nowadays. The Lyons live in a high-rise block of council flats and the Johnstones live in a upper-middle class house.
My design is based on four principles:
Duality: the set is divided in two, one side per family.
Combination: combining lights and shadows, I created a large panel of environments. Lights define where the characters are, (inside/outside, which side), and the mood.
All embracing: it could be me, it could be you. Buildings are blank canvas, it could be any building, any family.
Evolving set: as the boys are growing up, the city is also growing. This evolution is also noticeable with the costumes. The boys are growing up to finally fit properly into their clothes.
